EMDR Therapy in Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast QLD
EMDR Therapy in Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast, QLD
Many people seek EMDR therapy because distressing memories, traumatic experiences, anxiety, or past events continue to influence their thoughts, emotions, behaviours, relationships, or sense of safety. Although the past cannot be changed, the way traumatic memories are stored and experienced can often change significantly through therapy.
At Hennessy Clinical Psychology, EMDR is integrated within a broader trauma-informed approach. Therapy is tailored to the individual and may incorporate elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, emotional regulation skills, and supportive psychotherapy where appropriate.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. The therapy was developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and has since become one of the most extensively researched treatments for trauma-related difficulties [1,5].
EMDR is based on the understanding that distressing experiences can sometimes become stored in a way that allows them to continue triggering emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioural reactions long after the original event has ended.
During EMDR therapy, individuals recall aspects of a distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This commonly involves guided eye movements, although tapping or auditory stimulation may also be used.
Over time, many people report that memories become less distressing, less intrusive, and less emotionally overwhelming.
How EMDR Therapy Works
Researchers continue to investigate the precise mechanisms underlying EMDR. However, substantial evidence supports its effectiveness for trauma-related conditions [2–4].
EMDR does not involve hypnosis, memory erasure, or mind control. Instead, the therapy aims to help the brain process experiences that may have become “stuck” or insufficiently integrated.
For example, an individual may logically understand that they are safe in the present. However, a traumatic memory may continue triggering strong emotional and physical reactions. EMDR helps reduce the intensity of these responses while supporting more adaptive processing of the experience.
As treatment progresses, many individuals report that memories feel more distant, less emotionally charged, and less disruptive to daily life.
What Conditions May EMDR Help With?
EMDR is most strongly supported for PTSD and trauma-related difficulties. However, clinicians may also use EMDR as part of treatment for a broader range of presentations when clinically appropriate [2,3,6].
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Complex PTSD
- Childhood Trauma
- Adverse Childhood Experiences
- Trauma Related Anxiety
- Accident and Injury Trauma
- Medical Trauma
- Workplace Trauma
- First Responder Trauma
- Grief and Loss
- Adjustment Difficulties Following Significant Life Events
Suitability for EMDR depends on the individual’s circumstances, current stability, goals, and clinical presentation.
What Happens During EMDR Therapy?
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase treatment model [5].
Therapy generally begins with assessment, treatment planning, and the development of emotional regulation and coping skills. This preparation phase is important because trauma therapy should proceed at a pace that feels manageable and safe.
When appropriate, specific memories or experiences are identified and processed using EMDR procedures.
Throughout treatment, the psychologist monitors emotional responses carefully and helps the person remain grounded and connected to the present.
Consequently, many people find that EMDR feels more structured than they initially expected.
Is EMDR Effective?
EMDR is recognised internationally as an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and trauma-related difficulties [2–4].
Clinical practice guidelines from organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), and the Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health have identified EMDR as an effective treatment option for PTSD [2–4].
Furthermore, multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses have demonstrated significant improvements in trauma symptoms following EMDR treatment [6–8].
EMDR Therapy at Hennessy Clinical Psychology
David Hennessy is a Clinical Psychologist working with adolescents and adults experiencing a wide range of mental health and life challenges.
EMDR therapy is provided within a broader evidence-based framework. Therefore, treatment may incorporate emotional regulation skills, mindfulness, CBT strategies, ACT principles, behavioural approaches, and supportive psychotherapy depending on individual needs.
The aim is not simply symptom reduction. Rather, therapy seeks to help people develop greater flexibility, improved functioning, increased confidence, and meaningful engagement in life.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to talk about every detail of a traumatic experience?
No. Unlike some traditional therapies, EMDR does not necessarily require detailed verbal descriptions of traumatic events.
Is EMDR suitable for everyone?
Not always. A thorough assessment helps determine whether EMDR is appropriate and whether preparation work should occur before trauma processing begins.
Is EMDR only used for PTSD?
PTSD has the strongest evidence base. However, EMDR may also be used for other difficulties when clinically appropriate.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the complexity of the difficulties, treatment goals, current supports, and previous experiences.
