Fees & Referrals – Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a clinical psychologist?
No referral is required to book an appointment with a clinical psychologist. However, you will need a valid GP referral if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate under a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?
A GP prepares a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which allows eligible clients to access Medicare rebates for psychological treatment. Typically, the plan includes an initial referral for up to six sessions. After a review, clients may access up to ten sessions within a calendar year if appropriate.
How much is the Medicare rebate and out-of-pocket cost?
The current Medicare rebate for a session with a clinical psychologist is $141.85. With the current session fee, this results in an out-of-pocket cost to see David of $80 per session. Importantly, the Australian Government sets Medicare rebates, and these amounts may change over time.
Do you provide discounted services?
Reduced-fee appointments are not routinely available. However, fees may be discussed on a case-by-case basis. In doing so, care is taken to balance fairness, sustainability, and ongoing therapeutic availability.
Can I use private health insurance?
Private health insurance may provide rebates for psychology services, depending on your level of cover. However, clients cannot claim Medicare and private health rebates for the same session.
Do you accept NDIS referrals?
Yes, clients may access psychological services through the NDIS when their plan includes psychology.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you cancel with less than 48 hours’ notice, or do not attend your appointment, the full session fee applies. As a result, Medicare and private health insurance do not rebate these fees.
Are sessions available via telehealth?
Yes. Telehealth sessions are available, and sessions follow Australian psychological practice guidelines.
Is psychology confidential?
Psychological services are confidential. However, the law and professional ethics require limited exceptions, such as when there is a risk of serious harm or when disclosure is required by law. These limits are discussed as part of informed consent.
